SCGOP Welcomes Newt Gingrich to SC

Announces Media Availability in Charleston

(COLUMBIA, S.C.) – The South Carolina Republican Party is pleased to welcome Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the U.S. House, to South Carolina.  Gingrich will make stops in Rock Hill, Columbia, and Charleston this week.  He will hold a media availability in Charleston on Thursday, August 31 at 10:00 a.m. to discuss domestic and foreign policy.

“It’s a real pleasure to welcome Newt Gingrich to South Carolina.  He is someone who Republicans will long credit for his courageous leadership and dedication to improving the lives of all Americans.  He remains an active voice in public policy and one of our country’s great leaders,” said Katon Dawson, South Carolina Republican Party Chairman.

Newt Gingrich is known as the architect of the “Contract with America” that led the Republican Party to victory in 1994 capturing a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.  Gingrich was elected Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and under his leadership, Congress passed welfare reform, the first balanced budget in a generation, the first tax cut in a sixteen years, and restored funding to strengthen U.S. defense and intelligence capabilities.

Since leaving his leadership role in Congress, Gingrich has been an active voice in public policy.  He is widely recognized for his commitment to transform health care into the 21st century and his work to improve national security.  Gingrich was appointed to the U.S. Commission on National Security/21st Century and is credited with the idea of creating a Homeland Security Agency with a Secretary serving at the Cabinet level.
