As the Republican governor of what is arguably the most Democratic state in
America, Gov. Romney stands out as a Republican who gets it. His strategy for
success in the state that ironically also elected two of the most liberal
members of the U.S. Senate, John Kerry and Ted Kennedy, is simply remarkable.
He was named President and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the
2002 Winter Olympics to make that event a success and has remained active in
both business and community affairs.
After New Hampshire and Iowa, South Carolina is the third state holding a
primary in the wide-open 2008 presidential race and could be the turning point
for any campaign hoping to win the Republican South.
The 57-year-old Romney is coming to Spartanburg, South Carolina on February 21
to begin building relationships in South Carolina that he will need to win in
2008 if he decides to make a run for the White House. The fact that he is
coming to South Carolina so early in the process shows that he is committed to
following a time-tested formula for success. Just as then-Texas Gov. George
W. Bush did in 2000 traveling to key areas in South Carolina, Romney is
beginning to raise his profile in a state that is solidly Republican.
Married for 35 years to his wife Ann, Romney has five sons who are all married
and eight grandchildren. He received his BA with Highest Honors from Brigham
Young University in 1971 and was awarded an MBA from Harvard Business School
in 1975, receiving the prestigious title of Baker Scholar. In 1975, he
received his Juris Doctorate graduating cum laude from Harvard Law School.
Members of the press from across the state and the country are invited to
attend this event. If you are interested in receiving press credentials to
the Spartanburg County GOP President's Day banquet featuring Gov. Mitt Romney,
then please contact Chairman Beltram as soon as possible at 864-542-1992.
